What is Sports Physiotherapy?
Sports Physiotherapy is the management of a specific sports injury to allow people return or continue their chosen sport without damaging or compromising their body. Sport injuries can occur through contact or noncontact methods and may be acute, chronic/overuse or stress-related in nature involving muscles, ligaments, or bone. Despite the heightened insight into sports injury mechanisms, prevention programs, and load monitoring techniques in athletes, there has been no reduction in sports-related injuries in the last two decades. Preventing and managing sports injuries and return to sport are major concerns among athletes and their treating clinicians and a risk-free return to competition remains a top priority in sports rehabilitation.

What is included in Sports Physiotherapy?
At Cogent, the motto “know the sport, review the literature” guides our practice. We practice a team approach to ensure effective communication with the athlete's care team members including the coach, sports physician, strength and conditioning coach, sports psychologist, and nutritionist. Effective sports injury management includes three main components, namely injury prevention, injury identification and treatment, and injury rehabilitation.

We ensure treatment goals of sports physiotherapy are very clear and includes restoring function and performance to a preinjury level, safe return to the sport and minimizing risks of reinjury. Once the goal is defined, we break the program into different stages, and progress the athlete through them until they are fit to return to play (RTP). Our model is based active rehabilitation that avoids the detrimental impact of prolonged immobility on muscle tone, strength, and structure throughout the 3 stages. During stage 1 (Acute Phase), focus is on promoting tissue healing and avoid deconditioning. In Stage 2 (Reconditioning Phase), treatment focuses on strength and conditioning. Finally, Stage 3 (Return to sport phase) ensures safe and timely return to sport using the strategic assessment of risk and risk tolerance framework.

At Cogent, the progression along the treatment continuum and stages is based on functional criteria and not time based. We ensure sport-specific functional testing is used to determine the progression to the next phase with a keen focus on issue healing and awareness that remodeling can take up to 12 months after a sports injury.
