What is Senior Care Physiotherapy?

Rehabilitation for seniors refers to a range of specialized programs and therapies developed to cater to the unique needs and challenges faced by older adults. Senior Care Physiotherapy is designed to restore function, maintain current ability and improve the quality of life of older persons who have experienced physical or cognitive decline due to aging, injury, illness, or surgery.

What are the benefits of Senior Care Physiotherapy?

Senior Care physiotherapy holds immense importance in the aging population for many reasons. It helps seniors regain or improve their physical capabilities, allowing them to perform daily activities more independently with less pain and discomfort. Similarly, rehabilitation plays a crucial role in preventing or managing age-related conditions, such as mobility issues, balance problems, loss of muscle strength, reduced endurance, cognitive decline, and chronic diseases. By participating in rehabilitation programs, seniors can experience a range of benefits that will positively impact their overall health and quality of life. These benefits extend beyond physical improvements and encompass cognitive and emotional well-being.

What type of conditions are managed with  Senior Care Physiotherapy?

Senior Care Physiotherapy is suitable for adults 65 years and older who: have a history of falls; have been at risk of falls in the past year; or show clinical signs of frailty (e.g. slower gait speed, weight loss, fatigue, weakness, sedentary lifestyle) with or without changes in their cognition. Poor balance or gait can lead to falls, and falling is a constant worry for seniors and others with physical challenges. Similarly, sarcopenia; a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle condition is associated with increased likelihood of poor outcomes including frailty, sarcopenia, falls, fractures, physical disability and mortality in the elderly. These worries are not unwarranted, as falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and serious health problems in the Canada.
