Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in mild to severe injury to the brain. The term concussion, sometimes called mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), describes a complex and abnormal process that affects the brain. This process is initiated by traumatic biomechanical forces from violent shaking or direct blow to the head. For example, a blast exposure experienced during war as well as a fall with quick forward and backward movement of the head seen in contact sports without direct contact between the head and the ground can lead to a concussion. Concussion symptoms can appear immediately or have a delayed onset. However, most times they are resolved naturally within a short time period. Also, a loss of consciousness may or may not be present with a concussion

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION?
Although, the brain is well protected by the skull and surrounding cerebrospinal fluid, these structures are sometimes unable to prevent an injury to the brain. Anytime the brain moves rapidly against the skull, harmful changes in the brain/brain tissue can happen which negatively affect the normal function of the brain through concussions. A broad symptom picture occur with concussions and manifest in 4 key areas:
SOMATIC
Dizziness
Imbalance
Neck pain
Headaches
Nausea
Sensitivity to light
Sensitivity to sound
SLEEP
Hypersomnia
Hyposomnia
Difficulty initiating sleep
EMOTIONAL
Anxiety
Lability
Depression
Irritability
COGNITIVE
Poor Attention
Poor Memory
Fogginess
cognitive endurance
Delayed Processing
Post Concussion Syndrome
Second Impact Syndrome
Post-concussion syndrome can lead to serious long-term health problems if concussion symptoms persists. The prolonged disturbance causes significant problems in social or occupational functioning and represents a significant decline from a previous level of functioning. In school age children, the impairment may be manifested by a significant worsening in school or academic performance dating from the trauma.
Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) is an unusual and often fatal situation where a person sustains a second head injury before the first head injury is resolved. The initial concussion may have been minutes, days, or even weeks earlier. The second blow may be minor, with a direct blow to the head, or an indirect injury that results in accelerative forces to the brain. The patient may suddenly collapse and undergo rapid neurological decline and respiratory failure in the first few seconds to minutes after the injury. SIS results in death or severe neurological damage. SIS primarily affects adolescents and young adults and is thought to be caused by either a subdural hemorrhage (brain bleed) and/or loss of normal regulation of the cerebral vasculature that causes widespread hyperemic (blood flow higher than usual) brain swelling and increased pressure against the skull.
